UGC creator portfolio: what to show and what to skip

The portfolio is proof you can do the job. It is not your personal feed. A brand opens three videos: if the first one has no product, face and hook, they close. A beautiful later shot will not save it.

This guide covers how many pieces you need, what they must prove and how to avoid a bloated reel. It sits next to equipment and editing: without clean audio and a cut, the portfolio cannot carry an application.

Three to six pieces, not a whole channel

Three strong videos cover most product briefs. Six if you show different formats (testimonial, unboxing, tutorial). More than that dilutes: nobody reviews a thirty-file drive.

Each piece must stand alone. Do not rely on a “part 2”. The first second should signal category; the third should show the product.

What must appear

Face or hands, product, intelligible audio and a close with a benefit or use. Talking about “this amazing product” without showing it looks like an empty ad, not UGC.

Include at least one piece with on-screen text and one without: some brands want native captions, others want a clean plate for their type.

Real brands, never invented logos

Never fake a well-known logo to “simulate” a job. It is an instant reject and a legal problem. Use your own products, friends’ products or real purchases you can show.

If a job is under NDA, do not upload it. Replace it with a practice piece in the same format. Brands prefer honesty to an impossible reel.

Order and context

Lead with the piece closest to the brief you are applying to. If it is food, do not open with fitness. A short label helps: “Unboxing 20s · vertical · EN”.

State duration, language and whether the track is copyrighted. Famous songs in a portfolio make brands assume you cannot clear ads.

Mistakes that burn the application

Huge watermarks, ten-second intros, heavy filters, medical claims and “link in bio” mid-take. Also room hush or mic rustle: go back to the equipment guide.

Do not ask a brand to “imagine it with their product”. Show it or drop the piece. Portfolios sell evidence, not potential.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use TikTok as a portfolio?

Yes if the videos play without login and without a heavy watermark. Better: a direct link to three takes or a short reel that plays on first click.

Do I have to be on camera?

Not always: hand-and-product UGC exists. If you sell face-and-testimonial, you must show it. The brief sets the format.

What if I have no past jobs?

Shoot practice pieces with products at home. Label them as demos. An honest demo beats a fake client montage.
