UGC examples that work
Updated 27 August 2026
A UGC example that works reads with the sound off: product readable by second three, no rustle, a close that does not shout. This page lists formats and sectors with the same review bar. Copy structure, not another brand’s hook.
What to look for in a good UGC video
If audio and label fail, the hook does not matter. Use this list on the first cut, not revision five.
- Hook: by second 3 you know the topic.
- Product: readable label or UI.
- Audio: clear voice, no fabric rustle.
- Pace: 15–45 s, no ten-second intro.
- Close: benefit or use, not “link in bio”.
Examples by format
Four formats. Each one has its own copy: video multiplies, it does not replace.
Unboxing
Use it when the pack is the argument: a subscription, a limited run, a seal you can hear. Skip it if the product is an app with no box. 15–25 s is enough.
On-camera testimonial
Face, objection, benefit. Fits beauty, fintech and services. Ask for a specific profile or you will get 2 p.m. advert tone.
Tutorial and product demo
Visible steps. Fits ecommerce pages and “how it works” ads. If the tutorial runs past 45 s, ask for a 20 s cutdown.
Problem-solution for ads
Second 0: the problem. Second 3: the product. Close: the result. This is the format paid tests most. Four hooks on the same problem beat one “pretty ad”.
Examples by sector
The strip below will be vertical. Each sector has a note on what works and why.
Food and drink
Texture, steam, label. “I open it in an 8 m² kitchen” beats a studio plate. Avoid unapproved health claims.
Beauty and personal care
Real skin, application, honest before/after (same light). A ring light flattens; a window from a metre is more believable.
Automotive
A use detail (key, app, boot), not a TV-ad tracking shot. UGC here sells the weekday, not the slogan.
Telecoms and services
App screen plus a face explaining the bill. The product is abstract: the hook has to be a concrete pain (“they billed me roaming”).
Leisure and entertainment
A real reaction, not a slate. Music rights: assume you cannot use the show’s hit song.
What to copy and what not to
Copy structure and checks. Do not copy another brand’s hook line or fake a logo. If you want the brief behind a piece, use the template.
How to brief from an example (without copying it)
Pick a format, not someone else’s hook. If the example is a food unboxing, your brief asks for seal, label and 20 s, not the other jar’s line. Copy checks: product early, clean audio, one message. Do not copy the logo or the claim.
For ads, ask for the same conflict in four hooks. For a PDP, ask for proof of use and a clean plate. For brand organic, a take that reads on mute is enough. Mixing all three uses into “make me a UGC like that” creates the extra round.
Use the list at the top as a review checklist. If a take fails three points, do not publish it: ask for the cut or a new take.
The next brand step is the one-page brief and the closed price. The creator step is rates and hooks. Do not cross the silos except on those two pages.
A 60-second review checklist
Print the list or leave it in the review Slack channel. One person, 60 seconds, yes or no. “I like the tone” opinions come later, if the file is already usable.
If this is your first hire, start with one format and one SKU. The second video copies the one that worked, not a new topic. That is how you learn. Ten formats at once teach nothing.
Each format’s copy stays: video multiplies, it does not replace. Link every clip to this same URL so the checks do not get lost.
- Does the product read by second 3, also on mute?
- Is the label or UI readable on a phone?
- Is there rustle, kitchen noise or an empty room?
- Is the claim in the brief?
- Is the export 1080×1920 and is the last frame not black?
- Are paid and term written if it will run as an ad?
Frequently asked questions
Can I copy these examples into my campaign?
Copy checks: product early, clean audio, one message. Do not copy another brand’s hook line or logo.
Which format should I request first?
Physical pack: unboxing. A benefit: testimonial. A use: tutorial. Ads: several hooks.
How long should a usable example be?
15 to 45 seconds. A Standard 15s covers most tests. If a tutorial runs past 45 s, ask for a cutdown.
Does a face have to appear?
Not always. Hands and product work if the brief allows it. A face helps in testimonials and objections.
