UGC for Meta Ads and TikTok Ads

Updated 27 August 2026

UGC for ads is not “a pretty video we drop into campaigns”. It is a pack of hooks, lengths and paid use a media buyer can test the week it lands. If you brief one 45-second piece, you are buying a spot, not a creative system.

Why UGC works in paid (when it is built for paid)

Reels and TikTok reward faces and products, not a logo at second 0. A flat take beats a spot if the hook reads on mute and the claim fits legal. The algorithm does not “love UGC”: it loves hold. Real-customer tone usually holds better than an agency voice-over.

That breaks when the video runs a minute, the product appears at second 20 and the rights do not cover the ad account. Then you have an expensive organic reel.

The minimum pack a media buyer can use

Four hooks on one problem outperform a single “rounded ad”. The slot below is that grid.

  • 4 hooks on the same conflict, not 4 topics.
  • A 20–30 s master and a 10–15 s cutdown per hook.
  • One captioned cut and one clean plate.
  • 9:16; 1:1 only if the media plan asks.
  • Paid in writing: platforms, term, territories.

What to put in an ads brief

Conflict (not a slogan), allowed claims, banned claims, languages, whether a face must appear, and the length pack. Name the platforms. “For social” is not an ads brief.

Ask for timestamped notes, not “more energy”. The creator is not in your ad account: they cannot see hook rate. You can.

Rights: no paid, no ads

A feed-only video dropped into Meta later is a problem. On HICARI the closed price from €70 already includes one year of paid: there is no extra line for “if we advertise it later”. Whitelist and Spark from the creator’s profile are not Standard.

What to measure (and what not to ask the creator)

Hook rate, hold, CTR, CPA. Those live in the ad account. The creator delivers the file. Do not ask them to “make it viral” or send a ROAS report. If a hook dies at 2 s, change the hook, not the label colour.

UGC mistakes in campaigns

  • One piece “for every audience”.
  • Copyrighted music on the paid master.
  • Landing-page claims legal did not sign.
  • Asking for 16:9 because it “looks more pro”.
  • No cutdowns, then a bad crop in Ads Manager.

How to read the first test without fighting the creator

Look at hook rate and hold before CTR. If people leave at second 2, the hook failed: ask for another line, not another light. If they hold and do not click, the landing may be the problem, not the take.

Do not send the creator an Ads Manager screenshot at 23:00 with “this does not work”. Send the hook that dies, the one that holds and a request for two variants of the one that holds. That is an iteration brief, not a sulk.

When a hook wins, scale with cutdowns, not a crooked crop. Reserve the length pack in the contract. The media buyer and the creator should not have to guess.

Frequently asked questions

How many variants do I ask for in the first test?

Four hooks and two lengths is a reasonable first flight. Ten different topics dilute what you learn.

Can the same video run on Meta and TikTok?

Often yes if it is 9:16 and the claim fits. Check music, on-screen text and each platform’s safe crop.

Does the creator need followers?

Not for the file. Yes if you want Spark or a whitelist from their profile.
