Common UGC mistakes

Updated 27 August 2026

Common UGC mistakes are not “a lack of creativity”. They are mic rustle, an unreadable product, a ten-second hook and rights nobody signed. This is the list a brand uses when they hit reject. Read it before the second take, not after revision five.

The ones that burn the file (not “style”)

If the audio rustles, the label cannot be read or the take starts with “hey everyone”, grading will not save it. The craft shows in those three things. The rest is decoration.

Audio: rustle, kitchen and empty room

The built-in mic picks up T-shirts and pans. A lav under the chin and a headphone check avoid most returns. Do not “fix” rustle with a robot filter: shoot again.

Light and an unreadable product

A front ring light flattens. A window from a metre and an LED at 45° leave a face and a label. If the bottle is black, the ad does not sell. Move the product closer; do not digital-zoom.

A hook that arrives late

Ten seconds of room or logo is a swipe. The topic belongs by second 3. If you do not know how, use the transcribed hooks.

Delivery: the weak take versus the usable one

Left: intro, rustle, product at the end, invented claim. Right: hook, label, clean audio, a close from the brief. The slot compares the two. Until clips exist, the list below is the test.

  • Weak: “today I brought you”, 12 s of empty, a famous track, “best on the market”.
  • Usable: conflict in 3 s, label, clear voice, brief claim, 1080×1920 export.

Rights and music

Dropping a hit on a paid master is a craft error. Deliver mute or a track you can license. Signing “all use” out of embarrassment is the other error: see usage rights.

Portfolio and applications

  • Invented logos of big brands.
  • A drive of thirty unordered files.
  • Applying to a mum brief with a skate reel.
  • Promising dates you cannot hit.

How to check before you send

Watch the export on a phone, on mute and at low volume. Check the last frame. Read the brief again: length, language, claims. If one fails, do not send “we can fix it later”.

A practice round that avoids the return

Before a paid job, shoot a bad take on purpose: rustle, intro, product at the end. Then shoot the usable one. Watch both. That is this page’s comparison slot, made in your living room.

If you cannot see the difference, go back to kit and hooks. Applying more does not fix a file a brand closes in two seconds.

Frequently asked questions

Can the brand ask for another take if I made the mistake?

Yes, if the mistake is in the brief (audio, length, claim). If the change is “more energy”, that is another round and it is priced.

Does a huge watermark protect my work?

On a portfolio it gets in the way. On a delivery the brand cannot use it. Mark the filename with a version, not a full-screen stamp.

What is the most expensive mistake?

Assigning paid without writing it. The take can be shot again. The rights cannot.
