UGC niches: how to pick yours
Updated 27 August 2026
A UGC niche is the category your portfolio proves, not an Instagram hashtag. Brands filter on evidence: if the first video is food, do not open with a gym reel. Here is how to choose a lane without inventing a personality.
A niche is not “I like everything”
A niche is what you can shoot next week with product on hand and a credible tone. If you do not use skincare, do not sell beauty only because it pays more. The take shows.
You can have one main niche and one secondary. Three niches in the same drive look like a bargain bin.
Niches that ask for UGC (and what they need to see)
Beauty and care: real skin, application, short claims. Food and drink: texture, label, a small kitchen. Tech and apps: readable UI, a finger that does not cover it. Home: use, not a catalogue move. Fintech and services: a concrete bill or app pain.
Auto and telecom pay when there is a physical product or a screen. Leisure wants a real reaction and clean music rights. Do not pick because “the market is hot”: pick what already exists in your house.
How you prove a niche
Three pieces in the same territory beat ten loose ones. Same light, same audio, different hook. That says “I can deliver this on Tuesday”.
If you change niche, do not delete the old one: put it in a folder. A food brief does not need to see your fitness era.
Niche vs format
Niche is the category (cream, app, snack). Format is the video type (unboxing, tutorial). Brands buy both. A beauty creator who only does talking head misses application briefs.
When to specialise and when not to
Specialise when people already call you for the same thing and you can charge more. Do not specialise in month one to “build a personal brand”. Year one is about delivering and not lying about the niche.
Niche mistakes
- Putting “lifestyle” as a category.
- Faking an accent or a city.
- Using borrowed product you cannot get again.
- Picking a YMYL niche (health, finance) and inventing claims.
How to test a niche in one weekend
Pick a product you already own. Shoot three hooks of the same jar. Watch them on mute. If they are not believable, it is not your niche yet. If they are, those three pieces lead the portfolio for two months.
You do not need a real brand for the test. You do need to not fake a logo. The big-brand brief arrives when those demos exist, not the other way around.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change niche?
Yes. Shoot three new pieces and lead with them. You do not need a rebrand.
Which niche pays most?
The one you can deliver. Rate ranges live on another page; here the test is evidence, not an invented ranking.
Do I need to live in Madrid?
No. You need a credible set and product shipping. Name the city if the brief asks.
