UGC vs influencer marketing
Updated 27 August 2026
UGC and influencer marketing look alike on camera and differ in the contract. With UGC you pay for a file you publish. With influencer you pay for an audience and a date on their profile. Mixing them without saying so is how most budget fights start.
The difference in one sentence
A UGC creator delivers a master. An influencer delivers a post. You can ask the same person for both; then you pay both lines. If you only write “collab”, each side imagines their own deal.
UGC vs influencer table
If a cell is not in the contract, it does not exist. “All use” is not a cell.
| Hired UGC | Influencer | |
|---|---|---|
| Who publishes | The brand, on its channels | The creator, on their profile |
| What you buy | File + rights | Reach + date + screenshot |
| Followers | Irrelevant if the take works | The main criterion |
| Paid rights | Agreed by term and platform | Often absent unless extra |
| Metric | CTR, hook rate, ad CPA | Impressions, ER, code sales |
| Look | Flat, phone, customer tone | Careful feed, sometimes a set |
| Price anchor | Video and usage | Audience and niche |
When to hire UGC
When you need creative volume for ads, social proof on the PDP, or to fill the brand channel without a studio. The creator does not need a following. You do need a brief, rights and a place to publish.
Also when the product reads better in an 8 m² kitchen than on a set. Real-customer tone is the product you are buying.
When to hire an influencer
When the value is their people, not the file. A launch that needs 80,000 people in a niche to see the pack on Tuesday. A code that only works in their community.
If you also want the file for ads, say so. Many influencers do not assign the master, or they charge for it. Do not assume the post includes paid.
The hybrid model (and why it gets expensive if unnamed)
Hybrid: they post on their profile and assign the take for paid. It is useful. It is also two products. If you budget only the post, paid arrives as a surprise in week 3.
Write three lines in the brief: publication (date, accounts), file (formats) and rights (platforms, term). If one is missing, it is not hybrid: it is a misunderstanding.
What changes in the brief
UGC brief: product, hook, length, rights, deliverables. Influencer brief: message, date, screenshots, #ad, stories. Hybrid: both, plus who pays the boost if there is a whitelist.
If you cannot write the UGC one, use the template. If you are unsure you need an influencer, start with UGC examples and see whether the file alone is enough.
What changes in the price
UGC anchors on video and rights. On HICARI the brand sees a closed price from €70, with one year of paid and unlimited organic. Influencer anchors on audience and date exclusivity. Do not compare one number to the other without saying what it includes.
A UGC creator with 900 followers can charge more than a micro-influencer if you need 6 months of paid and four hooks. An influencer with 200,000 can charge less for a story if there is no assignment.
Mistakes when choosing
- Asking for “a UGC influencer” without saying who publishes.
- Running their reel on Meta with no assignment.
- Measuring UGC only by likes on the creator’s profile.
- Measuring an influencer post only by CPA in your ad account.
How to choose in a 15-minute meeting
Ask who publishes, which file remains and which metric leads. If the answer is “a bit of everything”, you are in hybrid and you pay two lines. If you only need variants for the ad account, it is UGC. If you need 80,000 people in a niche to see the pack on Tuesday, it is influencer.
Write the decision in the brief. Paid and social do not have to remember a call. A three-row table avoids “I thought ads were included”.
Frequently asked questions
Can an influencer make UGC?
Yes. Then you pay for the post and the file separately, or a written hybrid pack.
Is UGC cheaper?
On HICARI the brand pays from €70 for a Standard 15s, with one year of paid included. Influencer anchors on audience and date. The anchor is not “cheap”: it is file versus audience.
Do I need both?
Sometimes. A launch on one profile, then 12 UGC variants for ads. Do not mix them in one “collab” email.
